Overview
Domestic violence allegations involve conflicts between individuals with close relationships—spouses, former partners, family members, or others who share a household. Even a single heated argument can lead to charges if law enforcement suspects violence or the threat of violence. In Colorado, domestic violence is often treated as a sentencing enhancement, meaning any underlying offense (like harassment or assault) can be categorized more severely if labeled “domestic.” The long-term repercussions include not just possible jail time but also mandatory counseling, protective orders, and restrictions on firearm possession.

Defense Approach
Domestic violence cases can be both legally and emotionally complex. I approach them by examining the full context: prior history, the nature of the disagreement, witness statements, and any available video or audio evidence. In some situations, misconceptions or exaggerations escalate a simple argument into something more serious. My job is to clarify the facts, ensure law enforcement procedures were properly followed, and advocate for fair treatment in court. Whenever possible, I also encourage clients to consider resources for conflict resolution or counseling, especially if the situation can be resolved in a way that supports everyone’s safety and well-being.
